Centre for disease control student paper contest.

News : Headlines
Do you know an exceptional student who’s doing great work in the field of chronic disease prevention and health promotion? Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) is looking for students at the high school, undergraduate, or graduate level and recent post-graduates to submit papers relevant to the prevention, screening, surveillance, or population-based intervention of chronic diseases, including but not limited to arthritis, asthma, cancer, depression, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. The 5 primary goals for PCD’s Student Research Paper Contest are to: • Provide applicants with an opportunity to become familiar with a journal’s manuscript submission requirements and peer-review process; • Assist applicants to connect their knowledge and training on conducting quality research with a journal’s publication expectations; • Develop applicants’ research and scientific writing skills to become producers of knowledge rather than just consumers of knowledge; • Provide applicants with an opportunity to become first author on a peer-reviewed paper; • Promote supportive, respectful, and mutually beneficial student/post-graduate―mentor relationships that result in strengthening students’ ability to generate and submit future scholarly manuscripts. Manuscripts must be received electronically no later than 5:00 PM EST on Friday, February 23, 2018. Additional information and detailed submission guidelines are available on the PCD website at https://www.cdc.gov/pcd/announcements.htm Thank you in advance for your assistance and continued support of PCD.

Bill and Martha Gates foundation faces challenges in India

News : Headlines
Public recognition of problems with this trial started with the reported death of 7 girls. This led to immediate suspension of the trial in 2010 even though it was supposed to run until 2011. Investigations showed these deaths weren't directly connected to the vaccines (see table from the initial official investigation report, 1). However, investigations triggered by these deaths instead uncovered serious violations of the process of informed consent (see official investigation reports below from 1, see also 2). Aged 10 to 15, girls in this trial were obviously below the age of consent meaning their participation in the trial required the consent of parents/guardians. In the course of Government of India (GOI) investigations, the trial investigators 'were asked to submit 100 consent forms, chosen randomly, for both AP and Gujarat for independent verification' (1). These consent forms turned out to have several problems (see reports below from 1).

Important cancer screening paper for practitioners: not for those with cancer.

News : Headlines
From EVI - SCREENING FOR CANCER RISK: ESPOSITO’S IMMUNIZATION PARADIGM, CAPITALISM AND THE LOGIC OF FANTASY: This paper is about the biopolitical paradox by which, in the name of improving health, the medical industrial complex is progressively harming health. It is also an enquiry into the adequacy of a classical biopolitical theory, the immunisation paradigm, to explain this paradox compared with Marx’ and Lacan’s theory of the unconscious, and the logic of fantasy.

Attachment Relationship Quality and Depression in Treated Female Youth

News : Headlines
Female depressive disorders increase throughout adolescence. Research implicates the role of family background factors in adolescent depression, yet theoretical models of development guide few studies. The relationship between felt security of attachment and depression among female adolescents undergoing psychiatric treatment was investigated with Attachment theory forming the theoretical basis of the study.
